2016 Podre Sapaio Volpolo, Bolgheri

Super-Tuscan Seduction

I love sitting at the bar, side-by-side with my hubby.  It beats sitting across from him at the table where he is too far away!  That being said, I also like to keep my wine close, close to my heart.  As we have travelled through the vineyards of Tuscany, we reach for wines from Bolgheri without hesitation and with anticipated delight.

The 2016 Podre Sapaio Volpolo was made of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 15% Petit Verdot.  After completing fermentation in stainless steel tanks, this juice continued to macerate on the skins to extract additional flavor compounds and color.  The finished wine was then aged for 16 months in both French barriques and Tonneaux, followed by four months in bottle before release.

This super-Tuscan seduction included primary aromas and flavors of black currant, black raspberry, dried lavender, graphite, orange zest, and dried sage.  Secondary notes included a pop of cedar and nutmeg.  Tertiary notes unfolded to cigar box and crushed leaves.  This wine was dry, with medium (+) acidity, high alcohol, medium (+) aroma and flavor intensity, and medium (+) tannins that will allow this wine to age gracefully for many more years.  The finish was medium (+).

Date night was delicious at our new local hangout in Ridgewood, New Jersey.  This Bolgheri was bold, bright, and bewitching.  Perfect.
