2017 Suertes del Marqués Trenzado, Valle de La Orotava

Fabulous Funk

Suertes del Marqués is a family-owned winery located in the Valle de La Orotava appellation on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands!  As a quick refresher, the Canary Islands is a Spanish archipelago and the southernmost autonomous community of Spain, located just off the southwestern coastline of Morocco.

This white wine is a blend of many varieties, several of which are indigenous to the island.  Varieties include:  Listán Blanco, Pedro Ximénez, Vidueño, Marmarjuelo, Gual, Vijariego Blanco, Verdello, and Baboso Blanco.  Wow.

The 2017 Trenzado wine was powerful, offering many layers of intricacy.  Primary aromas and flavors included ripe pear, honeydew melon, kiwi, soft lemon, blades of grass, a whiff of tarragon, chamomile tea, white blossom, and minerality notes of flint and stone.  Secondary notes included butter, and tertiary notes opened to honey.  This wine was dry, with medium (+) acidity, medium alcohol, pronounced aroma and flavor intensity, and full body with a creamy mouthfeel.  The finish was long.  This was definitely a “Somm Wine,” meaning it may not capture the hearts of the masses but rather those who seek wines that offer a bit of fabulous funk, surprise, and indescribable (yet describable) notes in the glass.  Yes, this wine was a funk-aroonie, and I simply treasured it.
