2018 Von Winning Rosé, Deidesheim, Pflaz

Get Zippy

Happy May Day!  What a groovy excuse to open a bottle of rosé.  Have you tried a rosé from Germany yet?  Super cool-climate rosés from Deutschland are in a class all to themselves, as they are even more thirst-quenching and offer plenty of zip and rejuvenation.

The Von Winning winery is located in the Deidesheim village in the Pfalz region in Germany.  Formerly named the Dr. Deinhard Estate, it was renamed to Von Winning after Leopold von Winning, the founding member and first president of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP).  While that sounds like a mouthful, think of the VDP as one mechanism to identify top-quality wines from Germany.  Yes, it is much more complicated than stated here, but you get the point.

The 2018 Von Winning rosé is made with 100% Spätburgunder, which loosely translates to the late- (spät) ripening grape from Burgundy (Burgunder), also known as Pinot Noir.  Raised in stainless steel to retain fresh fruit character, this wine opened with primary aromas and flavors of strawberry, watermelon, bruised yellow apple, tangerine, a whiff of white pepper, and stone.  This wine was dry (troken), with medium (+) acidity, medium alcohol, medium (+) aroma and flavor intensity, and medium body.  The finish was medium (+).

Get zippy with this rosé.
